I don't know what you mean by "id", so let's clear something up.





There are two parts to an email address, the "user" part, and the "domain" part. They are separated by an @ sign--as in "user@domain".





(Note this is for EMAIL, not other types of DNS entries, which are very similar but slightly different sometimes, ignore that for now)





The domain bit is separated into at least 2 parts, the "domain" and the "Top Level Domain" part--sometimes abbreviated "TLD". In "yahoo.com", the "com" part is the TLD. Sometimes there can be a sub-domain, as in telegraph.co.uk, which is under the "TLD" of uk (United Kingdom) and ".co" which is the commercial "namespace" in the UK.





There are several sets of TLDs, one set is based on the ISO country codes, like US, UK, CA etc. These are supposed to be administered by their respective countries, although some countries have rented or sold their namespaces.





Another set are the more common com/net/org domains which were administered by a group set up to administer them. They have created .biz and a few others. Also there is .mil, which the US military (who basically funded the initial creation of the internet) reserved for itself.
